Milan City
We will describe here below the environment of the venue
which hosts the 2010 Canoe Polo World Championships.
Milan, 1.300.000 inhabitants, the main financial and economic centre in Italy, is the capital of Lombardy Region and Milan Province. Lombardy is in the North-West of Italy. The northern territory borders with Switzerland and is mainly formed by the Lepontine and Rhaetian Alps, with peaks, like the Bernina
Group, that reach 4.000 metres.
In the pre-alpine belt we find the largest lakes of Italy: Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, Lake Como, Lake Iseo, Lake Idro
and Lake Garda, which is the widest of Italy. The central and southern area is flat and represents the 47% of the territory, delimited on the South by Po River, the longest of Italy,
on the West by Ticino River, on the East by Mincio River
and is crossed from the mountains southwards by many rivers, among which the main ones are Adda River and Oglio River.
The very rich soil of Lombardy has facilitated the growth of
a profitable agriculture that utilises advanced farming systems, therefore bovine and swine breeding have largely developed and their products encouraged a strong increase in the processing industry.
Manufacturing is well-advanced in the region also in the metal mechanical and steel engineering, textile, chemical, petrochemical, food, and publishing, footwear and furniture sectors. The tertiary sector is well developed in Lombardy too, and the tourism industry is having a big expansion.
