The Idroscalo
|
The Idroscalo, a very sought-after competition venue for water sport, is located in East Milan.
It is easily accessible from the motorways, for instance, it is half way along the East Milan bypass road and the well-signed junction to get there is the same one for the nearby Linate airport.
The water basin measures 850,000 m², it is surrounded by a park enriched by numerous sport facilities and the entire complex measures 1,600,000 m². It was realised thanks to the Provincial Administration of Milan, the owner, which started the work in 1928 and inaugurated it on the 28th October 1930.
Soon abandoned as hydroplane harbour, it was mainly utilised for sport activities, so they built the tribune on the North-West shore and 12 hangars with changing rooms and toilets in the
athletes area, plus the large central building on the North shore, which is now used as a gym.
The first big sport events were the “Littoriali del Remo” in april 1934 and the rowing and speedboat racing European Championships in 1938. |

The Province of Milan
The Province of Milan, 3.170.000 inhabitants on a 1.578,90 m² area, is formed by 134 municipalities.
The territory, completely flat, is in the Mid-West Lombardy, in the high Po Valley area between
the Ticino River, which sets the West border, and the Adda River, which sets the East border.
Through the Province territory a few rivers flow: the Olona, the Lambro, the Seveso,
along with the milanese Navigli system: the Grande, the Pavese, the Martesana.
As to economy, the Province of Milan is the main area in Italy, here the 42,3%
of the enterprises of Lombardy and the 6,6% of the Italian ones are concentrated.
Nowadays the Province of Milan is an administrative entity whose tasks and competencies concern different fields: from environment to infrastructures, from mobility to tourism,
from school sector to social policy. All these competencies have a common denominator:
to operate concretely in favour of its own citizens.
The climate
The climate in the area including the Idroscalo competition field and the Linate airport,
considering the vast spaces free of built-up areas of the territory, preserves the characteristics of rural areas.
It is easy to tell that in the course of the Canoe Polo World Championships a sudden thunderstorm
might occur. Average maximum temperature of the period might range
from 29 to 24°C, whereas the average minimum temperature might range from 19 to 15°C.
Foggy weather might occur during the night and early in the morning. |
